Overview

Type 2 Turbidity Curtains: Medium-Duty, Permeable and DOT Solutions for Moving Water

Type 2 Turbidity Curtains are medium-duty floating sediment control barriers designed to help contain silt, turbidity, suspended sediment and displaced particles during marine construction and in-water projects where water movement, wind or moderate currents are present. Enviro-USA™ offers Type 2 Turbidity Curtains in permeable and impermeable configurations, including DOT-compliant Type 2 systems, allowing contractors to select a sediment barrier based on project specifications, water conditions and regulatory requirements.

Type 2 systems are suited for moving-water applications such as rivers, inland waterways, harbors, protected ports and lakes where wind or current may affect sediment movement. Enviro-USA™’s Type 2 product guidance describes these medium-duty turbidity curtains as appropriate for areas with small to moderate currents of up to approximately 2 knots or 3.5 feet per second. Permeable configurations can allow water to pass through the skirt while helping contain suspended sediment, while impermeable configurations provide a solid PVC sediment-control barrier. Site-specific factors such as current, wind, water depth, project duration, anchoring requirements and environmental conditions should always be considered when selecting and installing a Type 2 Turbidity Curtain.

A Type 2 Turbidity Curtain is a medium-duty floating sediment control barrier used to help contain silt, suspended sediment and turbidity during marine construction, dredging, shoreline work and other in-water projects. Type 2 curtains are commonly used in areas with moderate water movement, including rivers, lakes, harbors, protected ports and inland waterways. They provide a stronger sediment-control solution than Type 1 curtains when currents, wind or waves are present.

The main difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Turbidity Curtains is the level of water movement they are designed to handle. Type 1 Turbidity Curtains are generally used in calm or protected water, while Type 2 Turbidity Curtains are designed for moving water and moderate current conditions. Type 2 systems typically feature heavier-duty flotation, stronger tension components and more robust construction to support sediment control in more demanding environments. The correct curtain should always be selected based on current speed, waves, wind, water depth, anchoring and overall site conditions.

Yes. Type 2 Turbidity Curtains are available in both permeable and impermeable configurations, depending on the project and water conditions. An impermeable Type 2 Turbidity Curtain uses a solid skirt to create a continuous sediment barrier, while a permeable Type 2 Turbidity Curtain allows some water to pass through the skirt while helping contain suspended sediment. DOT-compliant Type 2 configurations may also be available for projects that must meet specific transportation agency or project specifications.
